2. Apple Extends 13-inch MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program to 5 Years

   
   
   

   Apple has extended its 13-inch MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program to five years. In May 2019, the company launched a service program to address 'Flexgate' display issues.
   
   The program applies to devices sold between October 2016 and February 2018 that experience the following issues:
   ● Display backlight continuously or intermittently shows vertical bright areas along the entire bottom of the screen
   ● Display backlight stops working completely
   
   To identify your computer's model and to see if it is eligible for this program, choose Apple () menu > About This Mac. Eligible models are listed below.

   Corellium has released a 'very early beta' of Linux for Apple's new M1 Macs. The company's CTO Chris Wade announced the beta late Saturday night.

5. Apple is Testing Foldable Screens and iPhone 13 With In-Screen Fingerprint Scanner [Report]

   
   
   

   Apple is testing an in-screen fingerprint scanner for its next generation iPhone and prototyping foldable screens for the future, reports Bloomberg.
   
   The Cupertino, California-based company has developed prototype foldable screens for internal testing, but hasn’t solidified plans to actually launch a foldable iPhone. The development work hasn’t expanded beyond a display, meaning Apple doesn’t yet have full handset prototypes in its labs, according to a person familiar with the work, who asked not to be identified discussing private matters.
   
   Internally, Apple is said to have discussed multiple sizes for a foldable display, including one that unfolds to 6.7-inches. The screens currently being tested have a mainly hidden hinge with electronics behind the display. 7. New Intel CEO Says Company Must Deliver Better Products Than 'Lifestyle Company' Apple

   
   
   

   Intel may delay its decision on how to fix the company's manufacturing woes in order to give incoming CEO Pat Gelsinger time to weigh in on the decision, reports The Oregonian.
   
   The chipmaker committed to investors in October that it would make that decision by the time it announced its fourth-quarter financial results, saying that would leave just enough time to make the switch in time to produce the new chips by its target date in 2023. That announcement is scheduled for next Thursday. But with Gelsinger’s surprise hiring Wednesday – he starts work on Feb. 15 – the chipmaker wants to give him time to weigh in. That’s according to an account of a Thursday all-hands meeting provided to The Oregonian/OregonLive by Intel employees. The company said it still wants to make the decision “as quickly as possible.”
   
   “We expect to make that decision very soon,” outgoing CEO Bob Swan told employees at the meeting on Thursday, “but we’re going to do it with Pat.”

8. Apple Plans First Major Redesign to iMac Since 2012 [Report]

   
   
   

   Apple is planning its first major redesign to the iMac since 2012, coinciding with the shift from Intel processors to its own Apple Silicon, reports Bloomberg.
   
   The new models will slim down the thick black borders around the screen and do away with the sizable metal chin area in favor of a design similar to Apple’s Pro Display XDR monitor. These iMacs will have a flat back, moving away from the curved rear of the current iMac. Apple is planning to launch two versions — codenamed J456 and J457 — to replace the existing 21.5-inch and 27-inch models later this year, the people said, asking not to be identified because the products are not yet announced.
   
   The iMac update will be one of the largest visual updates to Apple's product lineup this year. However, the company is also working on two new Mac Pro desktop computers. The first will be a direct update to the current Mac Pro and may still use Intel processors. The second is a smaller model that is half the size and will use Apple Silicon. Sources say that model will have a mostly aluminum exterior and could be nostalgic of the Power Mac G4 Cube.

10. New MacBook Pro Models to Get Brighter Screen, MagSafe, Faster Charging, More [Report]

    
    
    

    Following a report that claimed Apple is readying two redesigned MacBook Pro models with a new form-factor, new details about the notebook have surfaced from Bloomberg.
    
    As expected, Apple will upgrade the MacBook Pro with much faster processors that feature more cores and enhanced graphics. The 14-inch model is codenamed J314 and the 16-inch model is codenamed J316.
    
    Beyond the new chips, Apple will improve the MacBook Pro's display with brighter, higher-contrast panels, said a source. Another major change will be the return to MagSafe charging. Many power users were upset that Apple switched to USB-C charging on its recent MacBooks.
